Jab We Met v/s No Smoking
As
the saying goes no publicity is bad publicity, the break
up of Shahid Kareena seems to have done better promotion
for 'Jab We Met' than
any ad agency could ever do. Ending this weekend the
movie stayed on top of the box office in India and in
Uk too! While the unconventional storyline of John Abraham
starrer 'No Smoking'
turned out to be all smoke and no fire.
Produced by Dhilin Mehta and
directed by Imtiaz Ali, 'Jab We
Met' indeed puts a fresh twist to the time tested
tale of two strangers falling in love. Kareena plays Geet
in the movie a chirpy girl who meets Aditya (Sahid Kapoor)
in a train as she is going back to her home. They both get
on each other's nerves initially but finally hit it off as
Geet misses her train and Aditya has to escort her back
home. Shot in various locations of Mumbai, Punjab and
Himachal Pradesh, the movies is a visual treat from the
start to the end. The strength of the movie lies in its
simple story, peppy music, smart dialogues and indeed, the
Shahid Kareena chemistry.
The sufferer of the increased viewer
flow to the halls of 'Jab We Met'
is none other than the Anurag Kashyap's 'No
Smoking'. John Abraham stars as the smooth talking
chain smoker 'K' who is forced by his wife and friends to
quit smoking. K undergoes an unconventional treatment for
his smoking habit at a center run by Bengali Baba (Paresh
Rawal). From this point on the movie plunges into obscure
regions as the K tries to escape the clutches of Baba
Bengali who is hell bent on making life hell for K through
his eccentric and dangerous methods for making K quit
smoking, which go from threatening to chop off his fingers
to killing off his wife.
Despite all the huffing and puffing
by John Abraham in 'No Smoking'
it simply fails to blow the viewers away, and seeing that
K's life goes for a downhill ride when he quits smoking
the whole message of the movie gets blurred in translation
for a common viewer.
The Verdict
In both the movies it is the treatment of the content
which makes a movie click with the viewers, while 'Jab
We Met' with an age old story excels on basis of
its treatment, 'No Smoking'
with its unusual storyline fails to make an impact because
the whole point of the movie gets lost in its execution
