Pirates of the Caribbean
“Captain Jack is rocking
the ship.” shouts a crewman as the crew
make their escape from a place called end of the world.
Words more true were not uttered in the whole movie
because if not for Johnny Depp’s brilliant portrayal
of Jack Sparrow there will be a little to hold the movie
together.
The script of the movie bounces like a ship in troubled
waters as it struggles to tie up all
the loose ends from the previous two movies. The characters
are thrown in a wild ride from Singapore to an icy end
of the world inside Davy Jones’ locker to rescue
Captain Jack. The romance between Will Turner (Orlando
Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann ( Kiera Knightly) faces bad
weather as they both realize they can not trust each
other any longer. Davy Jones is shown as a star crossed
lover as he sheds tears for his lady love Calypso. With
Jack free from the clutches of Davy Jones, the brethren
of the pirates unite to take a stand against Davy Jones
and the East India Company who are hell bent of destroying
the pirates at the sea.
The special effects are quite luring besides the antics
of Captain Sparrow which essentially makes watching
this sequel worth your time and money. Particularly,
the scene in which a multitude of crabs carry the black
pearl across the desert into the sea and when battle
sparks off between The Flying Dutchman and The Black
Pearl, in the center of a raging typhoon.
Even though the story bobs up and down in the sea of
expectations, there is enough special effect laden action
to keep the story afloat. The appearance of Keith Richards
of Rolling Stones as Jack Sparrow’s father and
the keeper of the pirate code, adds a delightful touch
to the whole movie as Johnny Depp has popularized the
fact that he modeled the character of Jack Sparrow after
Keith Richards.
In the end the movie leaves the viewers satisfied,
albeit a bit confused. Unbelievably stretched over 2
hours plus, Pirates of the Caribbean gives little time
to understand what actually is going on. The bad guys
of-course end up dead, the romance of Will Turner and
Elizabeth Turner (yes, they do manage to get married
in the whole melee of the ending battle). Captain Jack
is back on the sea in his little dingy with a bottle
of rum and his compass guiding him to the fountain of
youth and the viewers leave the movie hall with just
one question in mind, will Jack be back again?
