Drought conditions turning serious in India

"Most parts of the country are facing severe drought conditions with no sign of monsoons."

The Monsoon has been delayed in some parts of the country. Usually the season begins around the first of June. India is dealing with a rain deficit that is 85 percent below normal. in some areas. If the rains don't come then the fields will remain empty, according to farmers.

There are roughly 600 million people in India who make a living off the land. In developed countries, irrigation is common and electricity readily available, but both are a luxury for most Indian farmers.

Rainwater is key to crop survival and the livelihoods of those who work the farms. 65 percent of farmers in India rely on rainwater. And India's economy relies heavily on agriculture. It accounts for about 17 percent of the gross domestic product.

But the government says there is still time for the monsoon to work its magic. Still farmers are beyond anxious.
